Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center
Located at 300 S Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs, CA 92262 in the mid-Century Modern building that was originally designed by E Stewart Williams, Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center is a cultural hub that celebrates architecture and design. This statewide museum features 28 galleries and two sculpture gardens. It also hosts art classes, lectures and special events.
Founded in 1938, the Palm Springs Art Museum is an accredited member of the American Association of Museums. This institution’s collections include works of art, architecture and design, as well as American, Mexican, Native American and European art. It also features a lecture hall, a cafe and a gift shop. The museum is also home to the Albert Frey archives and the archives of Arthur Elrod and Hugh M. Kaptur. The museum also features a variety of contemporary and modern art, including works by Picasso, Lichtenstein and Warhol. In 2012, the Palm Springs Art Museum reopened the architecture and design center to the public. The building was purchased from the Santa Fe Federal Savings and Loan building and restored by the Marmol Radziner architecture firm. It features a below-ground mid-mod staircase and wrap-around glass. The architecture and design collection is the newest addition to the museum’s collecting interests. In addition to the permanent collection, the Architecture and Design Center offers a range of temporary art exhibitions. These exhibitions include the Modern Chair exhibition, which features chairs designed by LeCorbusier. In addition to architecture and design, the Palm Springs Art Museum offers a variety of special programs and events. The Museum Design Store, which is located in the original bank vault of the building, offers a selection of design-oriented items. It also features original works by local artists.
